Hundreds of people gathered at MacArthur Park in La Mesa, CA, to celebrate Juneteenth, a federal holiday that commemorates the emancipation of the last group of enslaved Black Americans. The celebration was organized by La Mesa Juneteenth and Friends and included musical performances, a dance, food and crafts.
The event was organized by dozens of volunteers. They anticipated a small gathering of around 250 people. It was the first Juneteenth celebration in the city and it cost $6,000.
